Published: Apr 26, 2024 · Modified: May 20, 2025 by Kristy Bernardo · Leave a Comment

It isn't always easy to make mealtime fun and exciting in today's fast-paced world. Enter the Snackle Box-a trendy and easy solution that's for everyone and everything from busy professionals, active kids, date nights, and parties. We've got everything you need to know about Snackle Boxes, including how you can easily create your own!

What is a Snackle Box?

A snackle box is essentially a pre-portioned snack kit that you can take with you on the go. It typically includes a mix of proteins, fruits, nuts, sliced vegetables, and even a few sweet treats, all neatly packaged in a portable container. It's similar to the bento-style meals of Japan, but while that trend has been mostly geared toward children here in the US, the Snackle Box is used for just about anyone and any occasion.

Of course, since we're all about charcuterie, we can't overlook the obvious use of the Snackle Box as a charcuterie board on the go. Whether you replace the charcuterie board altogether or simply use the box to transport ingredients and assemble them at your destination, we think it's an ingenious idea!

Benefits of Snackle Boxes

One of the main benefits is their convenience. They're easy to plan ahead for a particular theme or throw one together at the last minute with what you have on hand. They make meal planning simpler and reduce the time spent preparing daily snacks.

They can also be a way to save money! It's usually much cheaper to buy snacks, cured meats, and accoutrements in bulk, which also makes assembling the boxes much easier. It only takes a few minutes to make one if you already know exactly what you're putting in it.

Assembling Your Own Snackle Box

Assembling a Snackle Box is really as simple as choosing your ingredients then putting each one into one of the compartments. Here are some tips to make it even easier:

  1. MAKE SURE THE SNACKLE BOX ITSELF IS FOOD SAFE: I put that in caps because it's IMPORTANT. This is the one that I use (and love, plus it's inexpensive - this is NOT an affiliate link), but there are a lot of food-safe options out there.
  2. Make a list of ingredients before heading to the store: This will make it so much easier! I often deviate from my list if I spot something interesting or there's a sale, but having my list means I end up with a good ratio of treats to healthy choices.
  3. An adults-only Snackle Box: If your gathering is adults-only, don't hold back on including gourmet cheeses and other upscale adult-friendly snacks. Add a little jar of truffle honey, a spicy chorizo, or even a couple upscale jello shots!
  4. Keeping it Cool: If you're transporting it, slide it into an insulated bag with a few ice packs. If it will be sitting out for some time, bring a sheet pan with high sides or something similar, add ice, and place the box on top. You can even set it inside a large cooler on top of the ice and other items.

Types of Snackle Boxes

They can be as simple as using them for snacks or lunch for your toddler or a more elaborate spread for a charcuterie date night. They're a great way to enjoy some tasty bites on a picnic or when you're traveling. Here are a few of the most popular ways to enjoy one:

For Toddlers: Snackle Boxes for toddlers should be both nutritious and fun. Choose colorful fruits, vegetable sticks with dips, cheese shapes, and whole-grain crackers to make the snacks appealing and tasty.

For Dietary Restrictions: Tailor snackle boxes to be gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan by substituting standard ingredients. For instance, use gluten-free breads or crackers, or vegan cheeses to make sure everyone can enjoy.

For the Beach or By the Pool: They're perfect for summer water days! Pack a mix of cheeses, cold meats, crackers, and a small dessert to enjoy outdoors. Set the box over ice to help keep it cool on really warm days.

Snackle Boxes for School: I don't know about you, but when my girls were young, packing their lunches wasn't something I enjoyed doing after the first 250 times. By planning ahead and having ingredients ready for school lunches, throwing them together is a breeze! Plus, what kid wouldn't want a fun lunch like a Snackle Box? Dice leftover, cooked chicken breast, a healthy fruit or two, some sliced veggies, and a little sweet treat.

Snackle Boxes for Work: Why not take one to your workplace? It's an easy way to pack your favorites for lunch, plus it's much cheaper than buying lunch every day. It's also much easier to control portion sizes! They're also easy to eat at your desk or during a quick break for those times when you just can't get away.

Snackle Boxes as a Charcuterie Board: Although we're partial to the more traditional charcuterie boxes, they're not quite as convenient or easy to transport as a container with separate compartments. With the exception ingredients like jam (which can easily be brought in its own jar), almost all charcuterie ingredients seem tailored to be transported. The beauty is that you can enjoy it straight from the box or easily assemble your board when you arrive at your destination.

Snackle Box Ingredients

Almost any ingredient can be used in a Snackle Box. We have a full list of meats, cheeses, and accoutrements if you need some inspiration, but this list should be enough to get your started:

  • Fruits and Vegetables: Choose colorful and crisp produce, no matter why type of box you're making. Think thin slices of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, grapes, sliced bell peppers, and strawberries.
  • Cheeses: If you're going for the charcuterie night vibe, aim for a mix of hard and soft cheeses. A sharp cheddar, creamy brie, and tangy goat cheese are popular choices. For kids, sliced or cubed cheddar is almost universally liked.
  • Meats: For a charcuterie theme, include a selection of cured meats such as salami, prosciutto, and soppressata. For traditional lunches or dinners for both kids and adults, opt for chopped, cooked chicken (you can include a dip if you like), tiny sandwiches, or other finger foods as your protein source.
  • Accompaniments: Don't forget the extras! Mixed nuts, olives, and pickles are like the "side dish" of the Snackle Box. They're also great if you get hungry and need a little snack before lunchtime.
  • Crackers and Breads: These are an obvious choice if you're going for a charcuterie board theme. But they can also be used to make little sandwiches for lunch, or eaten separately as a snack.

How do I keep snackle boxes fresh throughout the day?

To keep your snackle box fresh and chilled, use insulated bags with ice packs. If it will be sitting out for some time, bring a sheet pan with high sides or something similar, add ice, and place the box on top. You can even set it inside a large cooler on top of the ice and other items.

Are snackle boxes cost-effective compared to buying snacks?

Yes! If you buy your ingredients in bulk (hello, Costco!) you can end up saving a lot of money over time.

Can snackle boxes help with weight management?

They can definitely help with weight management since it's easy to control portion sizes and fill it with healthier choices.

Any quick assembly tips for busy mornings?

Prep ingredients in advance-chop veggies, boil eggs, and make little sandwiches at the start of the week. If you didn't have time to prep, at least have a list of what will go into each box. In the morning, it'll just be a matter of assembling. They're also easily assembled in advance and stored in the refrigerator, so all you'll have to do is grab and go!
